The internet, a vast digital landscape, underpins much of our daily lives. From communication and entertainment to commerce and education, we rely on websites and web applications to navigate the digital world.

However, just like any physical space, the web requires security measures to safeguard its users and their information.

This is where web security comes in, playing a crucial role in protecting websites and web applications from malicious attacks and vulnerabilities.

This guide explores the fundamentals of web security, to equip with the foundational knowledge to understand the threats and strategies for building a secure online presence.

It wouldn't be fair to proceed with this article, without reference to Hacktify where I started doing a penetration testing cybersecurity internship this month (so happy about this;-)).

Web applications are constantly under siege from malicious actors seeking to exploit vulnerabilities and gain unauthorized access.

These vulnerabilities can take various forms, including:

  • HTML Injection: Malicious code injected into web forms or user input fields can manipulate website behaviour, steal data, or redirect users to harmful sites.
  • Clickjacking: Deceptive techniques trick users into clicking on disguised elements, unknowingly performing actions like transferring funds or revealing sensitive information.
  • Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): Attackers inject malicious scripts into web pages, hijacking user sessions or stealing data when the script executes in the victim's browser.
  • Insecure Direct Object References (IDOR): Exploiting weaknesses in how applications handle internal references can enable unauthorized access to sensitive data or functionalities.
  • Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF): Attackers manipulate a user's authenticated session to perform unintended actions within the application, such as changing account details or making unauthorized purchases.
  • Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF): Malicious actors trick the server into making unauthorized requests to external resources, potentially compromising internal systems or facilitating data exfiltration.

(It was thrilling to walk through the labs on these, I do feel a bit smarter, lol)

Counter Measures

Fortunately, numerous measures can be implemented to mitigate these risks and up our web application security game.

Here are some key strategies:

  • Input Validation and Sanitization: Rigorously validating and sanitizing all user input to prevent the injection of malicious code or unauthorized access attempts.
  • Output Encoding: Encoding user-generated content before displaying it on web pages to neutralize any potential scripts or code embedded within the data.
  • Content Security Policy (CSP): Implementing a CSP to restrict the sources from which scripts, stylesheets, and other resources can be loaded, limiting the potential for malicious code execution.
  • Secure coding practices: Employing secure coding practices throughout the development lifecycle to minimize the introduction of vulnerabilities.
  • Regular security assessments: Conducting regular penetration testing and vulnerability assessments to identify and address potential security weaknesses before they can be exploited.
